"We're not looking at the disability. We’re looking at your abilities,” says Jeff Dolven, President and CEO of non-profit Skookum Contract Services. Located near Seattle in Bremerton, Washington, Skookum hires job seekers with disabilities to perform logistics and facilities management across the U.S. “Think about the engagement you get in the workforce when you can help people realize their dreams,” says Dolven.
WORKING HAND IN HAND
Bank of America Merrill Lynch has worked with Skookum to provide financing and strategic guidance for more than 15 years. “Skookum is a best-in-class organization that lives out an exceptional mission every day,” says Jeremy Bolles, BofAML senior relationship manager. He notes that Skookum actively recruits and retains its people, offers a full suite of benefits, and selectively competes for contracts to ensure a right fit for its employees.
CREATING A BETTER FUTURE
Running Skookum Contract Services is more than just growing the organization. “We’re here to change the world,” says Dolven. But he notes that a world-changing mission cannot move ahead on an independent basis. “We needed great stakeholders and great partners who really understand what we do to invest in us. Bank of America has certainly done that over the years.”
At the Bremerton YMCA, Skookum’s unique mission has had a meaningful impact. "Hiring people with disabilities enriches your workforce,” says Executive Director Jane Erlandsen. “It enriches your entire program."
